The Buzz Week in Review

A lot can happen in a week. Don't believe us? Just take a look at the Buzz. Over the past seven days, one of the world's richest men released a swarm of mosquitoes, a celebrated coffee was dissed in a consumer report, and a rising starlet was lauded for her stunning new look. Behold all these stories and more! It's the Buzz Week in Review.
Gates Makes a Point Release the hounds! Actually, make that
mosquitoes. Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and one of the world's wealthiest people, made headlines this week when he released a cloud of mosquitos at a technology conference. The philanthropist was pointing out the dangers of malaria for the world's poor. "Malaria is spread by mosquitoes. I brought some here," he said. "There is no reason only poor people should be infected." Fortunately for the terrified attendees, the mosquitoes were malaria-free. 'Twas all a rouse. Bill Gates 1, Terrified Minions 0.
Starbucks Takes Another Hit Remember when
Starbucks seemed like an unstoppable force? Those days are gone, kids. The troubled retailer, already suffering from falling profits and a slew of layoffs, was dissed in a recent coffee study from Consumer Reports. The ad-free mag ranked Eight O'Clock Coffee as the best-tasting coffee and noted that Starbucks, which costs considerably more, didn't even merit an honorable mention. Searches on "eight o' clock coffee" and "buy cheap coffee" made jittery jumps.
Frieda Pinto Rocks the Red CarpetUnlike Starbucks, the buzz surrounding "
Slumdog Millionaire" has been almost all positive. The indie film is the current favorite to take home the Oscar, and its star, the luminous Frieda Pinto, drew rave reviews and a flurry of searches after walking the red carpet in a stunning dress. Captured in Yahoo's OMG, the photos do an excellent job of showing why Ms. Pinto was one of the week's biggest searches among men age 18-34.
Also buzzing this week...•
Christian Bale needs a time-out. The Batman star let loose a foul-mouthed tirade on the set of the new Terminator flick, and the rant was caught on tape. He's since apologized.• Speaking of apologies, Michael Phelps asked for forgiveness after a photo surfaced of him honoring Cheech and Chong. He was suspended for three months by USA Swimming, but does the punishment actually mean anything?
